ATHENA CALCULATORS
How Much Mulch Do I Need?
Estimate how much mulch you need for garden beds, landscaping, tree rings, borders, and planting areas. Enter the area and planned depth to calculate cubic yards and a practical ordering quantity.
How the mulch calculator works
Measure the length and width of the area in feet and enter the planned mulch depth in inches. The calculator converts those measurements into cubic yards.
Cubic yards = length × width × depth in inches ÷ 324
The recommended order includes a 10% planning allowance for normal measurement variation and settling. It is a planning allowance, not a universal installation requirement.
Worked example
A 20 ft × 10 ft bed at 3 inches deep requires about 1.85 cubic yards before the planning allowance. With a 10% allowance, the recommended order is about 2.04 cubic yards.
How deep should mulch be?
Mulch depth depends on the type of mulch, planting area, and landscaping goal. Measure the depth you actually intend to install rather than relying on a default. For existing beds, account for the mulch already present before ordering more.
Bulk mulch vs. bags
Bulk mulch is commonly sold by the cubic yard, while bagged mulch is sold by the bag. Bag volume and coverage vary by product, so check the coverage printed on the exact bag before converting a cubic-yard estimate into a number of bags.
Planning irregular beds
For curved or irregular planting areas, divide the bed into smaller rectangles or other simple shapes. Calculate each section and add the results. This usually produces a more practical estimate than trying to measure an irregular outline as one rectangle.
Important planning note
Actual material requirements can vary because of settling, existing mulch, bed shape, depth, and product characteristics. Use the calculator for planning and verify the final quantity against the product information before ordering.
