How Much Mulch Do I Need?
Estimate the cubic yards of mulch needed for garden beds, planting areas, and landscaping projects from length, width, and depth.
Use the mulch calculator first
Enter the length and width of the area in feet and the planned mulch depth in inches in the ATHENA Mulch Calculator. The calculator reports cubic yards and a recommended order with a 10% planning allowance.
How to calculate mulch
For a rectangular area, multiply length by width by depth in inches, then divide by 324 to convert the result to cubic yards.
Cubic yards = length × width × depth in inches ÷ 324
Example: a 20 × 10 ft bed at 3 inches
A 20 × 10 ft bed has 200 square feet. At 3 inches deep, the base quantity is about 1.85 cubic yards. ATHENA's 10% planning allowance brings the planning quantity to about 2.04 cubic yards.
How much extra mulch should I order?
ATHENA adds 10% to the calculated volume as a planning allowance. This can help account for normal measuring variation and material needs during installation, but the final quantity should reflect your product and project conditions.
How much mulch do I need for multiple beds?
For irregular or multiple beds, divide the project into simple sections, calculate each section separately, and add the cubic-yard results. Keep the planned depth consistent unless different areas require different coverage.
How do I convert cubic yards to bags?
Bagged mulch is sold in different package sizes, so use the volume stated on the exact bag. A simple planning formula is:
Bags needed = cubic yards × 27 ÷ cubic feet per bag
Apply your planning allowance before converting to bags, then round up to a whole bag.
What should I check before ordering?
Confirm the product type, stated bag volume or bulk coverage, planned depth, delivery quantity, and the supplier's ordering increments. For bulk mulch, compare the cubic-yard result directly with the supplier's quoted quantity.
