How Deep Should Mulch Be?

Mulch depth affects both how a landscape bed looks and how much material you need. The appropriate depth depends on the mulch material, plants, soil, and site conditions.

A practical starting range

For many established landscape beds, about 2 to 3 inches is a common planning range. Some trees and shrubs may use a deeper layer where site conditions support it, while shallow-rooted plants may call for less.

Keep mulch away from trunks and stems

Do not pile mulch directly against tree trunks or plant stems. Keep a clear space around the base so the bark and crown are not kept continuously wet.

Depth changes the quantity

Doubling the depth approximately doubles the volume required for the same area. That makes depth one of the most important inputs in the ATHENA Mulch Calculator.

Calculate cubic yards

Cubic yards = length × width × depth in feet ÷ 27

For irregular beds, divide the area into sections and add the calculated quantities.

Refresh existing mulch carefully

Before ordering a full new layer, check how much material is already present. A refresh may require less material than building a new bed from bare soil.
