How Many Bags of Mulch Do I Need?

Calculate the cubic yards of mulch your project needs first, then convert that amount using the coverage or volume printed on the exact bag you plan to buy.

Start with the mulch calculator

Enter the planting area's length and width in feet and the planned depth in inches in the ATHENA Mulch Calculator. Add the 10% planning allowance when you are deciding how much material to order.

Why calculate cubic yards first?

Bulk mulch is often discussed in cubic yards, while bagged mulch is sold in individual bags. Calculating the project volume first gives you a consistent starting point before you compare products.

How do I convert cubic yards to bags?

Use the volume stated on the exact bag when the package provides cubic feet. There are 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard, so:

Bag quantity = recommended cubic yards × 27 ÷ cubic feet per bag

When the package gives square-foot coverage at a specified depth instead, use that stated coverage against your recommended square footage.

Example planning method

Suppose your project requires 2 cubic yards after the planning allowance and the bag contains 2 cubic feet. The volume conversion is 2 × 27 = 54 cubic feet, so 54 ÷ 2 = 27 bags.

For products with different bag sizes or stated coverage, replace the package number with the exact information printed on the product.

What if different areas need different depths?

Calculate each area separately using its planned depth, then add the resulting volumes. Apply the planning allowance consistently with your project plan before converting the total to bags.

Why bag counts can vary

Bag sizes, stated coverage, material settling, and installation conditions vary by product. Packaging is the best source for the exact volume or coverage you should use when ordering.

Bagged or bulk mulch?

Bagged mulch can be convenient for smaller or easy-to-carry projects. Bulk mulch can be quoted by cubic yard and may make comparison shopping easier for larger quantities. Use the calculator result as the common volume reference when comparing the two.
